Treatment of leishmaniasis in dogs

Antitishmania is a pale yellow and transparent solution for injection for dogs.

Each ml of Antishmania contains:

  • Active substance:

    • Meglumine antimoniate 300 mg
    • Antimony equivalent 81 mg
  • List of excipients:
    • Potassium Metabisulfite (E224)
    • Sodium sulphite, anhydrous (E221)
    • Sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment)
    • Water for injectable preparations

Indications for use of Antishmania, specifying the target species:

  • Dogs:
    • Treatment of canine leishmaniasis.
  • Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipient.
  • Do not use in dogs with hepatic, renal or cardiac insufficiency.

Amounts OF Antishmania to be administered and administration route:

  • Route of administration: subcutaneous.
  • The recommended daily dose of meglumine antimoniate is 100 mg/kg b.c. (body weight) (equivalent to 0.33 ml of veterinary drug / kg b.c. / day). If it is possible to administer several injections a day, it is recommended to administer the daily dose divided into two injections of 50 mg of meglumine antimoniate / kg b.c. separated by an interval of 12 h.
  • Volumes larger than 10 ml should be divided and administered in 2 different injection points.
  • The initial treatment duration is 3 weeks. This can be extended by 1 week if there is not enough clinical improvement.
  • Repeated treatments may be necessary to eliminate parasites. It is therefore recommended that the clinical course of the animal be monitored.
