CALMUROFEL

What do you know about Feline Idiopathic Cystitis?

It is the most frequent cause (65% of non-obstructive cases) of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) in cats younger than 10 years old.

FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) is a common disease in cats characterized by:

Dysuria: difficulty and pain when urinating
Stranguria: frequent urination of small volumes
Haematuria: presence of blood in the urine
Pollakiuria: increased frequency of daytime urination
Periuria: tendency to urinate in inappropriate places

These clinical signs are not specific to FIC, as they can also be observed for other causes of FLUTD.

In FIC, there is a complex interaction between the central nervous system and the endocrine system, as well as an involvement of other external factors:

The main risk factors of FIC are:

Reduced activity (sedentary lifestyle)
Cats fed mostly dry food
Neutered cats
Multi-cat households
Indoor cats
Excessive body weight (obesity)

Therefore, the control of stress and obesity in Feline Idiopathic Cystitis is very important.

Physiopathology

Bladder damage:

FIC reduces the concentration of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the inner layer of the bladder, thereby increasing its permeability to infectious microorganisms and irritating substances. This leads to inflammation and pain.

Impact of the risk factors

STRESS

Cats with FIC present an exaggerated response to exogenous stress compared to healthy cats. This is due to excessive synthesis of noradrenaline, the stress hormone. The constant activation of the response to stress contributes to an increase in the severity of inflammation and pain.

OBESITY

Obesity is one of the most important risk factors of FLUTD and is associated with high leptin levels in the blood. Leptin is a hormone produced by fatty tissue which induces the sensation of satiety in the central nervous system (CNS), thereby helping to regulate an excessive body weight.

Calmurofel© guarantees 360º activity against Feline Idiopathic Cystitis

125 mg Glucosamine HCl (> 99% purity)
37.5 mg L-Tryptophan
>20 mg Chondroitin Sulfate MPS ProtectTM (100% purity)
10 mg Hyaluronic Acid ORALVISC

Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine HCl

help repair the inner layer of the urinary bladder and reduce its permeability and exposure to infectious microorganisms. They also contribute to the management of pain and inflammation.

L-Tryptophan

In a study carried out in cats, orally administered L-Tryptophan reduced the frequency of stressrelated behaviour and signs of anxiety.

ORALVISC

The patented formula of Calmurofel®, which includes on Hyaluronic Acid ORALVISC reduces leptin levels in the bloodstream and helps restore the cat’s weight-regulating system.

In a study by Bioiberica, conducted in human patients, oral administration of ORALVISC caused a significant reduction in leptin serum levels compared with the placebo.
